Maran releases stamp on Kurinji
Newindpress.com, SOUTHERN NEWS - TAMIL NADU, Tuesday May 30 2006

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, announced that a commemorative postage stamp on late Hari Gowder, an exponent of Badaga community who was instrumental for the establishment of Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society (NCMS), would be released this year.

Releasing stamp on ‘Kurinji Flower’ costing Rs 15 at a function held at Thamizhagam here on Monday, he said that there was also a plan to release stamp on Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary.

He informed that in the past, the India Post had released stamps on Nilgiris Mountain Railways, Lawely Institute, Lovedale Lawrence School and Radio Astronomy Centre, which were all based at Nilgiris.

"The officials advised me to take Kotagiri Road to reach Ooty avoiding Mettupalayam-Coonoor Road. From this, I can make out how bad the road is. Anyway, I will take serious efforts for the repair of the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty Road, which was recently declared as National Highways," Maran said.

Regarding the sick Hindustan Photo Films Company (HPF), the public sector unit in the district, the IT Minister said that the Central Government had already given Rs 20 crore to the unit.

At the present scenario, alternatives like IT park should also be considered, he said and added the price of X-ray manufactured by the HPF was higher due to its high production cost.

But in the international market, imported digital X-rays are available at cheaper rates, he said.

On tea crisis, he said that the Central and the State Governments would jointly evolve something concrete to provide a permanent solution by fixing a minimum support price.

The previous AIADMK Government only thought of temporary solution such as issuing subsidy, which had not been useful for relieving the small tea growers’ pains, Maran said.

Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Khadi Board K Ramachandran thanked Maran for having accepted his demand and assured to release stamps on late Hari Gowder and Mudumalai Sanctuary.

He hoped that Maran would do a lot for the development of the Nilgiris district with the good cooperation of the DMK Government at the State.

MLAs B Gopalan and A Soundarapandian offered felicitations. Earlier, K V Sundar Rajan, Post Master General, Western Region, Coimbatore, welcomed the gathering. V Rajarajan, Director of Postal Services, proposed a vote of thanks.
