We all feel proud to be BADAGAS , with all the limitations and short comings in our community.

But , if we can learn about those great Badags who had done a great deal of selfless service to the society, may be much better feelings will fill our hearts. A name that readily comes to mind is Rao Bahadur H B Ari Gowder . And also, of course, his father Rao Bahadur H J Bellie Gowder who built the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) from Mettupalayam to Ooty during the British time.

It is said that, more than hundred years back , when all the contractors refused to undertake the job of laying the railway track from MTP to Ooty through the thick of jungles with wild life roaming freely and in a difficult terrain with steep gradients and rocks , " Bahadur Bellie Gowda " accepted the challenge. The beauty is that he involved a large number of Badagas in this great task. NMR is considered a marvel of technical and engineering feat in the world.

Incidentally, "His Master's Voice" , HMV , record company had brought out a musical record (graphite LP) some eighty odd years back , on him titled ' Bahadur Bellie Gowda - Nakku Bettaga Raja '. The singer, if I remember correctly, was, one Mr.Jogi Gowder from Jagathala (Jakkada).

Rao Bahadur Bellie Gowder's only surviving daughter Mrs.Idy Ammal (Idy Hethe) , incidentally my mother and inspiration for all my efforts, now 95 years old and living in Hubbathalai, is a store house of information on Badagas in general and about her father Rao Bahadur Bellie Gowder and brother Rao Bahadur Ari Gowder in particular.

Mr.A.Kari Gowder of "Porangadu Seeme Nala Sangam ", Kotagiri , has brought out a booklet containing some information about these great Badagas recently.

Since, I could not upload the 'scanned' document in BADAGA.ORG , I have published them, along with some rare photos, in my websites :

It will be great if we can get information (including photos) about other great Badagas. I will consider it to be an honour to publish them in my websites.

My email id : bjaypee@gmail.com

On a later date, we may bring out a book /CD for permanent preservation
