Minister assures to find solution to tea industry crisisUdhagamandalam, May 23: Tamil Nadu Khadi Minister Elithorai K Ramachandran today assured to take steps to put an end to the six-year old crisis in the tea industry in the hilly Nilgiris District.
Replying to felicitations on becoming the first ever minister from the Badaga community, a native community of this district, at a function here, he said he would also work towards restoring the pristine glory of the Nilgiris.
Speaking on the occasion, former MLA T Gundan said thousands of Badaga men and women in their traditional dress would reach Chennai on June 15 to convey the community's personal gratitude to DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for inducting Ramachandran into his ministry.
Earlier, a rousing reception was accorded to Ramachandran with thousands of Badaga people from four corners of the Nilgiris, known as nakku betta (four hills) in their traditional dress and sporting the white turban thronged the town this morning.
The minister's family members, including his aged mother, witnessed the reception silently with tears in their eyes, being overwhelmed by the occasion.
